Janine would have been the teacher and it would have been her who put the group together. Also, Egon would have long since quit his job at the university to become a mystic and travel through the afterlife (losing his ability to speak English and speak in an unknown ghostly language), only returning to the world of the living to warn people about the war. The ghouls were originally written as demons ( but that was nixed early on to avoid offending anybody's religious sensibilities) that threatened to spill over and destroy the Earth.
The show was originally planned as a series-wide Myth Arc revolving around a coming war in the spirit world between supernatural ghosts (dead humans) and " peranatural ghosts (ghouls)" (spiritual entities like Gozer who were never alive to begin with). Role Reprise: Not only does Maurice LaMarche reprise his role as Egon Spengler from The Real Ghostbusters, but the two-part episode "Back in the Saddle" also has Frank Welker, David Coulier, and Buster Jones return to reprise their roles as Ray Stantz, Peter Venkman, and Winston Zeddemore. Recycled Script: It's odd how difficult Egon found it to tell Janine he loves her in the climax of "The Crawler," considering they went through the exact same situation in the original series episode "Janine, You've Changed.". Reality Subtext: Maurice LaMarche had just become a father, and some of his exhaustion found its way into his older, more weary characterization of Egon. While Frank Welker reprises his role as Ray Stantz in the Grand Finale two-parter "Back in the Saddle", some of his lines were actually done by Pat Fraley because of Welker being sick at the time those lines were recorded. Billy West took over for Frank Welker as Slimer, although Welker returned as Ray Stantz. Her voice actor in this series was Pat Musick. Neither Laura Summer nor Kath Soucie returned to voice Janine. Toyless Toyline Character: Garrett was not included in the toyline, although a prototype figure of him exists. The most notable of these were the deluxe figures, which featured battery-powered packs with light and sound.
